As Liberia elects the first African woman head of state in history, I can't help but take some delight in the symbolic symetry of the event, Liberia having also been the first African nation to gain independence from European style imperialism.
How poetic!

Was Liberia ever technically considered a colony?
ReplyDeleteYeah, I shouldn't have said "european imperialism". As it was founded as a direct result of the ACS (American Colonization Society), though, its colonial status was explicit.
ReplyDeleteGranted, the circumstance behind its formation are peculiar and unique for an African nation, but the fact that its colonial stage only lasted some twenty-five years doesn't make it not a colony. Does it?
An American colony, even. Far out!
